Roadmaster Weather Information Systems
Road weather information is no longer an optional luxury. Road maintenance engineers need to do more with less by working smarter. Essential to working smarter is having accurate, site-specific road weather information from which to make the right crew level and material application decisions. Money spent on RWIS can easily be justified by the resultant reduction in maintenance costs and environmental problems.
Coastal Environmental Roadmaster Weather Information System is without doubt the most rugged, easy to use, open and expandable RWIS available. Our experience in weather data collection systems, combined with the power of our electronics and advanced software ensures reliable, accurate information at a lower cost. Open communications architecture, and a design philosophy that encompasses future integration will provide you with a system that can expand with your needs.
Roadmaster is an Open System
Coastal's Roadmaster Weather Information System is designed to be an "open architecture" system. This means:
- None of the communication protocols, formats, or data is proprietary to Coastal Environmental Systems.
- We provide each customer with all schematics and diagrams for interconnections between hardware components plus a clear layout drawing for each component or sensor connection.
- All generated data belongs to the system owner, and can be openly disseminated by them.
- All communication protocols (between the CPU and the RPU's, and between the CPU and the on-line and remote terminals) are non-proprietary.
Systems are Built to Meet Your Needs
Rather than forcing customers to accept a "one system fits all approach," we customize your weather station to fit your needs. In addition to weather related data, these other capabilities are available:

Standard Sensors:
Standard sensors depend on your application, but typically include wind speed and direction (gust and standard deviation sigma theta are calculated), air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, rainfall and pavement condition (up to 21 weather sensors per station). Other sensor possibilities are solar radiation, snow level, soil moisture, soil temperature, visibility, and present weather. For nearby wetlands water temperature, water level, water quality, etc. can be provided. Please contact us for a complete listing. (Sensor Specifications)
Power:
The ZENO® RWIS weather station runs on AC (110 or 220), solar panel or batteries.
Towers:
A standard RWIS tower is a "tip-over" triangular 30-foot tower with welded aluminum cross beams.
Central Site Software:
Choose from a complete line of readily available central site software, depending on the number of sites, the type of information you wish displayed, the format of information displayed (maps, graphs, text, charts, etc.), the networks you wish to connect to (Novell, Banyan Vines, Ethernet, etc.), weather prediction capabilities and the type of computer you want the system to run on (PC, Workstation, other).
Modes of Telemetry:
Coastal Environmental Systems employs many different ways to get the data from the remote RWIS weather station back to the central site including:
